This session will explain the challenges we face in providing income that lasts a lifetime. Retirees are living longer and fewer of them have a defined benefit pension, therefore need a way to manage longevity, investment and inflation risks. Panelist will describe barriers that employers face in offering lifetime income options within their retirement plans including concerns about fiduciary duty and the transactions costs involved in selecting and monitoring such options. Additional barriers include a lack of understanding and knowledge, concerns about lack of control over funds, bequest motives, discounting the future and underestimating life expectancy. Questions that government regulators are wrestling with in considering whether and how to facilitate the use of lifetime income solutions will also be addressed.
